The first Harley-Davidson Dyna Low Rider rolled onto the scene in 1977, and that’s the moment we saw what factory custom design could really amount to be. In my opinion, the Harley Low Rider S is all that 70's chopper-era, Harley legacy rolled together with today's technological badassery to get a raw, powerful, and modern machine. Check out this overview of one of my favorite cruisers to hit the road; the last Dyna Low Rider: the 2017 Harley-Davidson Low Rider S.

We all know that the Harley Dyna is no more (and will be sorely missed on my part) and the Softail family has now absorbed the 2018 Low Riders. While it may be hard for us to put the words “Low Rider” and “Softail” in the same model name, we still love the Low Rider for its chopper-era DNA and blank canvas capabilities for customization. 

The 2017 Harley Low Rider S boasted a 1801cc, Twin-Cam Screamin’ Eagle special that was known as one of the largest engines that had been factory-fitted on a production bike. That beast of an engine didn’t come up short when it came to massive power, and with the six-speed Cruise Drive transmission, the bike came with some get-up-and-go. With a Fat Bob-inspired two-into-two exhaust, the S produced some serious noise from bottom to top of the rev range. The side’s big ram-air intake paired with side-exit stacked pipes would have you thinking that some aftermarket mods were added to upgrade this Harley’s sound, but I think it’s safe to say that’s just one of the natures of this beast.

The look of the S is low and mean, and the shape has many of the familiar aspects of a dragster-style cruiser. The center of gravity is low, and the seat is positioned to put your arms up with your feet squared. Everything about the low-ride and improved suspension screams easy-handling, and all you need to do is sit back and enjoy the cruise. You’re riding low, and you’re riding mean with the feel of a stripped-down, supercharged and surefooted Dyna. It’s really something to behold.
