As a first-time rider, it can be difficult to tell the difference between motorcycle fact and fiction, especially when you’re getting information from someone who claims they’ve been riding “since before you were born.” After all, riders with this much experience ought to be trusted indefinitely, right?

At the end of the day, every seasoned rider has his or her own way of doing things. And even if their way isn’t the right way, they’ll still have a thing or two tell you about helmets, ATGATT, 1%ers, and so on. But, when what they say start calling your safety into question, it becomes that much more important to spot the myths and debunk them, especially while you’re still learning how to ride a motorcycle.

If you’re a beginner motorcyclist wondering “Why ride a motorcycle?” or “How safe are motorcycles?” start by consulting as many members of the riding community as you can before solidifying any beliefs about motorcycle safety. It never hurts to have too much information in this scenario.
